![]() They not only look good, but they flow perfectly. And, of course, kudos for bringing in Mike Sinterniklaas to voice what’s, arguably, his best role to-date: Kenji Koiso. ![]() Even the actors voicing child characters, of which there are a few, are great at that, which isn’t easy given that adults voicing kids is tough to do properly. The characters all sound appropriate for their ages and archetypes, and not a single flat line exists. Speaking of which, the voice acting in the dub is excellent! It’s a Mike McFarland-FUNimation effort, so it’s gonna sound good regardless, but it’s definitely one of his best. I pretty much love every character…save one, but I’ll cover him eventually. I love Kenji and his mathematics nerdyness. It borders there on a few occasions, but it, thankfully, never quite reaches that level. Summer Wars, like Howl’s Moving Castle, has the unfortunate disposition of being tricky to make sound effects for without it feeling hokey or cartoony, particularly in OZ. It’s refreshing to see attention to detail in an industry where it’s normally lacking, yet it’s par for the course with Hosoda. Conversely, when the Jinnouchi clan is mourning their matriarch’s death, a pan shot shows each family member in a unique pose. When Kenji’s getting backstory on the Jinnouchi family while on the bus to Natuski’s grandmother’s house, for example, none of the background characters are completely still: they sway with the bus’s movement, a few of the kids are playing on their handheld game consoles, the people in front of them are even staring out the window or reading a book. Hosoda’s of the “ADHD” class of animating, as his characters are in constant movement. People are constantly moving, even if they’re not really doing anything…”īeing a major fan of Hosoda, and having written a piece on his style, I whole-heartedly agree. Director Mamoru Hosoda has very active, fidgety style to his characterization. It may be Studio Madhouse, but it doesn’t look like a Satoshi Kon movie just because they share a studio, for example. “…t doesn’t look JUST like everything else. I guess it’s moot to state that, since most anime films of note are, but it still needs to be pointed out because of its animation style. But let’s start with the positives:įirstly, this film looks gorgeous. ▼ The official 4DX preview trailer of "Summer Wars." As 4DX effects can only be experienced in a specially equipped movie theater, the true nature of the effects is something that won’t be revealed until January.Summer Wars is unusual, as its biggest strengths and weaknesses often are one-in-the-same. and the physical effects of a 4DX presentation, synchronized with on-screen events, promise to make both the virtual reality OZ and the physical world depicted in the film come alive like you’ve never experienced them before. ![]() The protagonist, a high school student with a penchant for code-breaking, becomes entangled in an OZ hacking catastrophe that threatens to disrupt the safety of the physical world. "Summer Wars" is a fitting selection to receive the 4DX treatment given that its setting is interwoven with a virtual reality world known as OZ. Hosoda is one of Japan’s most popular anime film directors today, having such international hits as "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" (2006), "Wolf Children" (2012), and "The Boy and the Beast" (2015) to his name. "Mirai" (2018), his most recent film, was even nominated for an Academy Award though it ultimately lost out to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." In celebration of the film’s 10th anniversary this year, Studio Chizu, which was established by Hosoda in 2011, has announced that a 4DX version of the film, with moving chairs, splashing water, and blowing air, will be screened at select theaters throughout Japan beginning on Jan 17, 2020. It went on to win a handful of awards, including the prestigious Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year in 2010. Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, produced by studio Madhouse, and originally released in August 2009, "Summer Wars" was the first of Hosoda’s directorial works to start off as an anime original project.
