Like you said, game worked before, you did not mess with the game to cause it. Yesterday was tuesday = MS chosen patchday for windows in the US (rest of the world get it wednesday). the intro video normally plays when loading SC:FAF doesn't it? This is where I now get just a black screen? Ok could be a clue there maybe? presumably it would do so forever, but if I tap a few keys, the game's menu does then start, I've not had to tap the keys before. The game has also suddenly developed problems loading, it just stays on a black screen for ages. It's looking like this game is just never going to work on this PC again, with no logical reason I can see! I am not having any such problems on other games, so I do not believe it is the sound card or it's drivers suddenly becoming useless out of the blue! Regardless, this has also not fixed the problem. Though it still remembered some game settings from when I'd last run it, so not everything was cleared / replaced by reinstalling. ![]() I've completely removed and reinstalled SC:FAF. So I next removed the BrewLAN mod I had been playing with, without ANY problems for the past few days. Rebooting the PC did not fix the problem. only to once again, all disappear one by one over the next minute. If I save the game and reload it, all the sounds return. They start off working fine, but one by one by one each individual sound effect simply "switches off" as I play (in skirmish), until after about 60 seconds there is only silence, well actually the music is still there, just no SFX. Today, all of a sudden, with NO changes having been made to either the game, it's option settings, it's installation, or to my PC or anything, the sound effects have spontaneously started going wrong. If you want a simple GUI-based approach then you can use something like File Association Fixer instead:Īn alternate solution in this case would be to stop using Windows' limited Compressed Folders feature and switch to a better archiver instead, such as 7-Zip or WinRAR.I've been playing SC:FAF with no problems at all for the past two weeks. REG file can be deleted once you confirm everything's working properly. REG file (for example W7ZipFix.reg), double-click it, press Yes twice to dismiss the UAC dialog and to continue, then OK. Refer to Image Reference 2 (Image Shack link Below) zip is there, however when i go back to the GUI listing of file associations, it is still the same as the image above. Reading online, it suggested using cmd prompt as admin to reset it to default, I can't find the webpage but i think i entered in a command similar to: "Assoc. zip and changed it from "Shell32.dll" to "Windows Explorer", which i believe is the default value and then the. Start > All Programs > Default Programs > "Associate A File Type Or Protocol With A Program". Unknown to me, i didn't pay attention, i accidentally set this to be the default file association for all. Then i pressed browse as shell32.dll isn't listed, i then changed the search filter from "programs" to "all files (".")", navigated to the Shell32.dll path which i believe is somewhere in "C:\Windows\Systen32". Doing research online, it said, right click file > Open with > Select Default. So i tried to convert the file back into a "Windows shell common dll", this was the default file type association, which from my research uses the shell32.dll. however as you know, this turned the file type to a zip. In an attempt to re download the program, from where it left off. ![]() Back Story: I downloaded OuterWilds and the download failed to complete, being incompetent but also tech savvy, i got the "OuterWilds_Alpha_1_2_PC.zip.part" file, renamed it to "OuterWilds_Alpha_1_2_PC.zip".
